The arrival of cricket in Argentina
The arrival
of cricket in Argentina was produced by the English Invasions of 1806 .
Although without much precision, it is believed that the first game was played
in San Antonio de Areco and faced a group of British prisoners who were
captured by the criollo forces.
Major
Alexander Gilliespie, one of the imprisoned, wrote in his diary: "The
arrears made in La Esquina and granted a break of a few days, full pockets and
time to spare revive the national amusements such as horse racing and cricket,
for which We always carried the material. " From that moment, they began
to organize different informal meetings among British residents.
By 1831, Argentina
was a place with more immigrants from Great Britain outside the Commonwealth
orbit. The majority were merchants or bankers who saw the Río de la Plata as an
optimal place to make their investments. One of them was James Brittain, owner
of a villa in the current neighborhood of Barracas. There were cricket matches.
Brittain played a leading role during the presidency of Bernardino Rivadavia as
he was one of the nine founders of the Bank of Buenos Aires, the first
Argentine banking institution.
